The Immigrant’s Heartbeat

November 5, 2024 - 7:30pm

The Annex, Vancouver

Duration: 10 min

This event is an opening music for the "Katha - Keertana Chronicles"

Tombak and Daf: Babak Borna

Description

In this percussion performance, the artist explores the journey of a migrant through rhythm, portraying the pressures, constraints, and restrictions that stifle them, leading to their decision to embark on a perilous journey and ultimately find liberation.

The unique challenge of this performance lies in the artist's storytelling, conveying the protagonist's emotional journey solely through rhythms and sounds from the percussion instrument, without using melodic instruments.

Babak has garnered acclaim for winning Best Performance at various international festivals and events. His achievements include recognition from the Moscow Conservatory of Music and Iran's thirteenth Fajr Music Festival.

In the spirit of storytelling, we pause to honour this land's ancient and contemporary narratives. We stand upon the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.

Just as we celebrate the diverse voices of immigrant and refugee artists, we recognize the First Peoples who have woven this place's first and enduring tales. Their stories are a testament to resilience, creativity, and the power of community. As we come together from many corners of the world, may we always remember, respect, and learn from this land's stories.
