Japanese Sword Performance

 Instructed by Haruno Niiyama and Yuki Kedoin, both with international experience in performance, stage combat, and Japanese theatre techniques.

 

Description

Blending traditional Japanese performance techniques with contemporary theatre, this work creates visually dynamic and emotionally engaging experiences. Drawing on international stage and screen expertise, including credits from the Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning series Shōgun, the artists bring a rich and refined approach to performance. 

 Haruno and Yuki’s work is distinguished by multiple recognitions, including a Screen Actors Guild Award for Shōgun (2024), the NAJC Young Leaders Fund, and the Bill Millerd Artist Fund. Their artistic approach merges traditional Japanese performance techniques with contemporary theatre, resulting in visually dynamic and emotionally engaging work.

In the spirit of storytelling, we pause to honour this land's ancient and contemporary narratives. We stand upon the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.

Just as we celebrate the diverse voices of immigrant and refugee artists, we recognize the First Peoples who have woven this place's first and enduring tales. Their stories are a testament to resilience, creativity, and the power of community. As we come together from many corners of the world, may we always remember, respect, and learn from this land's stories.
